you people on the loan lucked out that this whole thing happened with the ceo exposing jessica - and as a result now the mother is protecting the daughter's identity theft by keeping the loan current

There is no evidence that "mother" is involved at all. Everything (all the postings here, and the two prosper identities) could have been done by one person, and the loan payments may well be coming from one of Jessica's earlier victims.

The FBIs complaint doesn't mention any investigation to find other victims. That would be consistent with my experience with the FBI. They document enough to get one conviction, and then move on. So there are quite possibly other victims out there still paying.

Well, if she really did have $24,000 in cash in the bank when she posted her first Prosper listing, you know where it came from :)

Didn't more than one GL see her bank account statements?

Based on the court records, I'm inclined to believe that she really did have $24k in the bank, and it came from some married guy.

As you read the criminal complaint, it's clear that she wasn't new to this con. She had experience.

This just goes to prove once again that the more a person talks it up on these forums while trying to get a loan, the more likely they are to be scamming you. If a borrower has 100 posts or 20,000 words posted before they are half-funded, consider it a big fat red flag...

Anton wasn't the only bidder, just the largest (and most dramatic) one.

At the time, we speculated that, after all the controversy, Prosper would repay this loan out of corporate funds rather than allow it to default. It is certainly not beyond their capabilities to do this without anything out of the ordinary appearing on lender accounts.

One question: The complaint was filed October 2. When was DebbieS's loan brought current?

it missed the oct 5th payment. Loan was brought current Nov 7th & 16th. (Nov 7th for the Oct 5th payment, and Nov 16th for the payment due Nov 5)

so yes, the chronology correspond

I bid on DebbieS' loan before I noticed the controversy in the forums. As a lender on the loan, I'd appreciate it if eveyone leaves this one alone for now.

DebbieS brought the loan current. It only went 1 month late (not 3+) and she's even paying off the late fees. If the money's coming from a blackmailed lover's hush fund or from a devoted mother's threadbare pocket, it's all the same to me. But, contacting the State Attorney General and turning off the due repayment faucet would not be appreciated.

What happened with her?

Short version:
Her loan went late (3 months I think). She had some severe financial issues (no surprise, we knew her financial situation was tight).

She tried to keep in contact in the forums at first by sending a message to Psychdoc to post on her behalf, but he's not active on the forums at the moment. Then when she realized her message wasn't received, she came and posted herself. Recently made a partial payment. Some forum members came down on her for being late on her loan. Others appreciated her willingness to stay in contact and at least make the effort to make her payments.

She is now in the process of getting her loan paid up.

(Long version is in the thread Urbi linked to.)

Fraud? How can this be?

The Wall Street Journal said the postings were legitimate. Prosper validated the financial details.

QUOTE
In another instance described by company executives, a woman with bad credit applied as a prospective borrower and didn't get the loan. Then her mother, who had a better credit history, registered as a borrower on the site in order to get a loan for her daughter, the mother said in her posting.

QUOTE
The postings of the mother and daughter, which were controversial but in the end were legitimate, generated eight pages of discussion among lenders, who debated whether that should be allowed and whether the mother should be given the loan. When Prosper validated the financial details in the mother's application, she did receive the loan.

IMO,the WSJ did a good job of reporting on Prosper.

After all, the reporter was only able to rely on what Prosper told them about Jess. Apparently, her story checked out to the extent that Prosper was able to verify it. I can understand how that happened, based on the timeline that I was able to put together.

BTW, $9,100 for a 2001 Saab convertible was a darn good deal earlier this year. Mayhbe Jess has a future in used car sales :)

Apparently, her story checked out to the extent that Prosper was able to verify it. I can understand how that happened, based on the timeline that I was able to put together.

Ok. But I seem to remember at the time this was going on that you were the person who early on declared JessM a fraud. So much has been written about this pair of borrowers that I admit that I am unable to paw thru the heap of text and find the references. Isn't this the case where you said you uncovered something that you didn't want to reveal, but said you would reveal at an appropriate time? Do I remember correctly or am I confusing this case with another, or perhaps just hallucinating?

If I do remember correctly, perhaps now is a reasonable time.

What was the original info that caused you to declare shenanigans?
